Shalani Soledad is looking forward to Willie’s big comeback

Despite all the negative issues surrounding Willie Revillame, Shalani Soledad remains steadfast in her support of the embattled TV host.

In an interview with journal.com, Soledad defended Revillame from any wrongdoing concerning the case of six-year-old Jan-Jan Suan. On the whole, Soledad noted, “What you see on ‘Willing Willie’ is how we are as Filipinos and how we are as a society today.”

A separate report on abscbnnews.com cited the Valenzuela councilor as among those hoping that Revillame would be able to stage a big comeback following the latter’s self-imposed two-week hiatus.

Various sources noted that Soledad’s wish for her birthday on April 27 is for “Willing Willie” return on air.

Soledad, the former girlfriend of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, has been Revillame’s co-host in “Willing Willie” since November last year. She has consistently denied persistent rumors linking her romantically to Revillame.

More, reports from abscbnnews.com said the song was written and produced by Bruno Mars, the half-Filipino, half-Puerto Rican singer/songwriter famous for writing the hits “Just the Way You Are” and “Billionaire,” among others.

Meanwhile, Bomboradyo.com also reported that singer Leah Salonga also made mention of the Mars-Pempengco collaboration on Twitter by re-tweeting the info sent to her.

Pempengco is the second singer to do a version of “Before It Explodes.”

Jan-Jan incident in Willing Willie elicits coverage from foreign press

“The sexualization of children is something that is happening worldwide without really coming to grips with it,” wrote Australian child-protection activist Bernadette McMenamin.

This was cited in an article by Emma Kate Symons in The Australian, a news website based in Australia.

Willing Willie, a variety and game show on TV5, faces huge controversy after Jan Jan‚ a six-year- old boy‚ did a “macho dance” in an March 12 episode of the show. A macho dance is composed of sexual gyrations usually associated with male performers in gay bars.

The host, Willie Revillame, encouraged the child by having him repeat the dance at least five times, and giving the child P10,000 as cash prize. The live audience, which included Willie's lawyer Boy Reyno, cheered.

The episode elicited passionate and angry reactions from private personalities and government functionaries.

At press time, the show has chosen to suspend its airing for two weeks.

Meantime, investigations by the Commission on Human Rights and the Movie Television Review and Classification Board are ongoing.

The issue has gone beyond local shores. Articles in the foreign media have appeared.

The article by Emma Kate Symons in The Australian picked up on the reaction of a gender expert‚ Carina Chotirawe from Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn University‚ regarding the Willie Revillame issue.

According to Chotirawe‚ having children act in a sexual manner is already a form of child abuse. “Depicting them in a sexualized manner is a form of child abuse and it is very worrying to see children appearing in such lewd ways.”

Chotirawe expressed her opinion directly about the TV5 show: “The Revillame show was despicable. It felt like he was prostituting poverty‚ making the poor pander to him for quick cash fixes‚ as he does on a daily basis‚ and never mind if it entails a kid being sexed up and crying as he [Jan-Jan] does so pitifully.”

Chotirawe went so far to say that Willie has been playing God. “Willie was acting like God‚ dispensing patronage to parents inured to the poverty they see as their lot in life—and if lewdness gets them instant cash‚ then so be it.”

A Washington Post article posted last April 11 also tackled the subject of Willing Willie. It quoted a post by Monique Wilson, who has some presence internationally, having appeared as the female lead in the play Ms. Saigon in London.

The article said, “Philippine-born theater actress Monique Wilson‚ in a widely circulated email carried by local media‚ argued that such TV shows 'dumb down audiences (and) disempower them by creating a mendicant society with game shows that promise quick money.’”

Meantime, Willie Revillame's camp has been arguing that the six-year-old boy came to the studio to audition, chose his own dance, performed it of his own free will, and did so with the express consent of his parents.

The camp has also explained that the boy was crying, not because he was forced to dance in front of an audience, but because he had been frightened earlier by a huge fellow whom the host trotted out just before he performed.

The boy's parents have issued affidavits saying they allowed the boy to dance in the program. They have also sued a psychologist and two bloggers for libel for saying they allowed their child to be abused.

Taal Volcano may erupt anytime

THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology is considering to raise the alert status if the number of quakes continues to increase.
Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum in a radio interview said Taal Volcano may erupt anytime soon.
Solidum said Alert Level 2 is still hoisted over Taal Volcano even as seven volcanic quakes were recorded in the past 24 hours.
He said Alert Level 2 is hoisted over Taal Volcano with the interpretation that magma has been intruding towards the surface, as manifested by CO2 being released in the Main Crater Lake and increase in seismic activity.
Phivolcs has advised the public that the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro are strictly off-limits because sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate.
He said breathing air with high concentration of gases can be lethal to humans, animals and may even cause damage to vegetation.
It is also reminded that the entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended.

Willie Revillame’s lawyer slams CHR, Carandang!

WILLIE Revillame’s lawyer Atty. Leonard de Vera yesterday slammed the Commission on Human Rights hearing on the March 12 Willing Willie episode as being biased and one big sham. “The CHR bias is very evident in the testimony of self-proclaimed child psychology expert, Dr. Honey Carandang, who has declared Revillame guilty of child abuse without having examined the alleged victim or his family. This amounts to malpractice,” said the counsel.

De Vera said Carandang is part of a grand scheme to destroy Revillame and Willing Willie. The lawyer bared that the supposed child psychology expert had written MTRCB Chairperson Grace Poe Llamanzares urging sponsors to pull out from Willing Willie, which she urged to be suspended along with its host.

Revillame’s lawyer said Carandang’s letter triggered the “biased” probe of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Commission on Human Rights and the MTRCB on the base.

“DSWD Sec. Dinky Soliman conclude that there was child abuse without even meeting Jan-jan and the family. The conflict of interest of the three-member panel with close connections with ABS-CBN constrained them to inhibit from this case,” De Vera added.

De Vera said that the three who have inhibited themselves from probing the case are Leah Navarro, cousin of ABS-CBN owner Gabby Lopez; Atty. Eric Mallonga, chief legal counsel of Bantay Bata 163, an ABS-CBN organization; and Atty. Eugenio Villarel, counsel for various ABS-CBN talents. He is married to an executive of ABS-CBN.

Revillame’s counsel added that many people question why the DSWD and the CHR are using Carandang as a resource person notwithstanding her premature finding of child abuse in the case and her affinity to ABS-CBN.

“There are hundreds of capable psychologists in this country to handle this issue, why her? Dr. Carandang went as far as comparing Jan-jan to a prostitute — who was paid to perform.

“The CHR has right from the start condemned Revillame for child abuse, and the ongoing hearing would most likely confirm or validate this stand. Thus, the hearing is a sham as it deprives Revillame of due process of law and the presumption of innocence in a case which is issentially criminal in nature,” said De Vera.

De Vera added that Carandang was hardly an impartial psychologist when she appeared before the CHR. “She relied apparently on the Youtube video that was maliciously spliced to put Revillame in a very bad light,” he stated.

Revillame’s counsel reiterated that there was nothing lewd or obscene about Jan-jan’s “body wave” dance. “Malice is in the eye of the beholder. Jan-jan performed the same dance at the Mall of Asia for the ‘Little Mr. SM contest’ and nobody found it lewd or obscene,” De Vera stressed.

Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez bug PNoy

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III just can’t get Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez out of his mind.

In his speech during a dialogue with soldiers at Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija, the President reiterated his resolve to remove Gutierrez from office which he said is a big step in the campaign to weed out corruption in government particularly in the military.

Aquino scored anew the plea bargaining agreement between the Office of the Ombudsman and former military comptroller Carlos Garcia, who was accused of enriching himself in office with military funds.

The President earlier declared that his administration is “at war” with the Ombudsman.

He said he is aware of the sacrifices of ordinary soldiers and how allegations of corruption add to their sufferings even as he vowed that his administration will make the guilty pay for their misdeeds and public confidence in the military will be restored.

The President said he will also see to it that the needs of the soldiers are taken care of including housing and modern equipment.

Boy abused in ‘Willing Willie,’ DSWD says

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has stepped into the controversy involving television show “Willing Willie” and a 6-year-old boy who was made to dance in a lewd manner in exchange for P10,000.

The DSWD said the incident that aired March 12 on TV5 is clear case of child abuse.

“The sequence shows the boy gyrating in a distasteful manner with the audience, including the host (Willie Revillame), manifesting no evidence of concern or alarm for the child,” the agency said in a press statement.

“This incident is clearly a violation of Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act and a blatant manifestation of child abuse,” it said.

The DSWD said child abuse includes the following acts: “psychological and physical abuse, neglect, cruelty, sexual abuse and emotional maltreatment,” and “any act by deeds or words which debases, degrades or demeans the intrinsic worth and dignity of the child as a human being.”

“Putting pressure on children to do acts such as mimicking adult sexy dances, in exchange for a certain amount of money, and at the expense of being laughed at and ridiculed by hundreds of people, clearly traumatizes the child,” it added.

“This is a clear form of child abuse and will not be tolerated by the Department of Social Welfare and Development,” the statement said.

Apology

Revillame, the producers of his show and the management of TV5 immediately issued a public apology.

In an official statement, they “sincerely and deeply” apologized for the segment, “which viewers may have found offensive or in bad taste.” They stressed that it was “never their intention to humiliate or abuse Jan-Jan or any contestant on the show.”

They also pointed out that the child’s appearance on the show was completely voluntary and with the blessings of his parents.

“He appeared to be sad or even in tears, not because he was being forced to dance, but because he felt the dance was ‘serious’ and he was playing a role. He did not want to smile because of his missing upper front teeth and because of the presence on the set of former basketball player Bonel Balingit who Jan-jan thought was a scary ‘giant,’” the statement read.

According to them, Jan-Jan has performed in the past in school programs and mall contests.

“TV5 and Wil Productions express profound regret for any insensitivity on their part, and wish to thank all those who have expressed concern. We are always grateful to be reminded of our obligations to the viewing public. In turn, we hope to make clear that the objective of the show has always been to bring joy and hope to Filipinos, whether they are participating on the show or viewing at home,” the statement read.

Insensitive

Before the apology, the DSWD said it had gotten in touch with ABC Development Communication chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan and asked that children should not be allowed to appear in TV shows like Willing Willie “especially those capitalizing on poverty as a source of immediate entertainment.”

In its letter to Mr. Pangilinan, the DSWD also rebuked Revillame’s “insensitive actions and remarks.”

The government agency also revealed that it will look for the boy’s family, determine the incident’s effect on the child and determine if necessary counseling should be given to the child and his parents.

The incident has set social media networks like Facebook and Twitter on fire. Blog entries condemning the show and its host have also been published online.

Twitter users condemned the incident while a campaign was launched on Facebook to raise the issue to the authorities:

MTRCB investigation

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), in a statement Monday, said it has referred the issue to its Hearing and Adjudication Committee.

MTRCB chairperson Mary Grace Poe Llamanzares said the board also received numerous complaints about the said “Willing Willie” episode wherein the boy was asked to gyrate like a macho dancer.

Llamanzares said it is the board’s duty “to enforce the Constitutional mandate that the state shall defend the rights of children from all forms of neglect, abuse, cruelty, exploitation, and other conditions prejudicial to their development.”

The board further emphasizes that whenever children are featured in television programs, producers are mandated to observe legal standards stipulated in R.A. 7160 to avoid “psychological abuse xxx cruelty, sexual abuse and emotional maltreatment” and “any act by deeds and words which debases, degrades or demeans the intrinsic worth and dignity of the child.”

Arnell Ignacio on ‘extortion’: I felt humiliated

Television host-comedian Arnell Ignacio on Monday said he felt humiliated when 3 members of the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) allegedly extorted money from him two weeks ago.

Ignacio, who already filed an extortion complaint against PO3 Jose Levy Llagas, PO3 Neil Pono and PO1 Joel Lasala, lamented that the 3 police officers treated him as if he was a criminal.

“Napakasakit ng ginawa ng tatlong yan sa akin. ‘Yong katakot takot na kahihiyan na inabot ko sa kalye na yon. Biruin ninyo ‘yong tratuhin kang kriminal, limang taon kong hinulugan ‘yang kotse na yan,” Ignacio said in an interview with Noli de Castro on radio dZMM.

According to Ignacio, the 3 officers followed him while he was driving his Porsche last March 26 in Pasig City around 7:30 p.m.

“Hindi ako pinara, sumusunod sa akin ang patrol car 875… Ang sabi sa akin bakit daw ‘yong plaka wala. Sabi ko nandito ang plaka kako ang mga turnilyo ko nalaglag kasi ginamit sa exhibit ang sasakyan. Ito at nandito din ang papeles ko. Tsinek din nila doon sa kanilang record, it was registered under my name,” he said.

Despite the documents, he said he was told to pay P100,000 for the offense. When the comedian pointed out that he did not commit any violation, he said they still demanded that he produced the money.

“Ito pa ang tanong, ‘Saan ka pinanganak?’ Sabi ko sa Maynila. Sabi niya, ‘Ang kotse mo pang-probinsiya.’ Nanarantado,” he added.

He said Pono was drunk when the incident took place.

Ignacio admitted that he gave in after they threatened to impound his luxury car. They then escorted him to his house to get the money, he said.

“Lalo pa ngang na-enganyo kasi nakita nila marami daw akong pera, marami daw akong kotse. Sabi ko, ‘Hindi na ako nagta-trabaho sa TV, nananahimik na po ako,’” Ignacio recalled.

“Hindi nila alam my CCTV dito sa bahay at nakita ng mga kapitbahay kasi ngayon dini-deny nila yan. At ako pa daw ang naka-inom,” he said. “’Yong pag-abot ko ng pera walang nakakita… ang daming tao nakakita sa kanila na katabi ko, dinala nila ang patrol car nila dito.”

Per the order of Chief Supt. Leonardo Espina of PNP-HPG, the 3 policemen have been disarmed and are now being investigated.

Ignacio, who vowed to fight the case till the end, praised Espina’s immediate action. He also asked other people with similar case to come forward and file necessary charges.

MTRCB probes ‘Willing Willie’ incident

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) is conducting a preliminary investigation on an incident involving a 6-year-old-boy’s “macho-dancing routine” on television show “Willing Willie.”

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, MTRCB chairperson Grace Poe-Llamanzares said a committee has been formed and it commenced its first hearing, which is open to the public, on Monday afternoon.

“Lahat po ng mga concerned citizens, groups na gustong makinig o kung anuman iyon, ay dito lamang sa general area ng opisinang ito,” she said.

She said the committee has also invited representatives from TV5 network to participate in the proceedings.

The media, however, would not be allowed to cover the proceedings as it may “hamper the spontaneity of the people inside especially when they’re playing for the camera.”

“We have to respect, I guess, their right to privacy at some point,” Poe-Llamanzares added.

The MTRCB chair said the hearing might last for 2 weeks as all personalities involved in the incident must be given time to be heard.

“Usually, adjudication lasts for about an hour or less but in this particular case, we have to present the opinions of several experts in the field of child care or child rearing. It might drag longer than an hour,” she said.

“It can last for that long (2 weeks). That’s why, if ever we come up with a statement, or kung may statement man mamaya, maaring preliminary lang muna,” she added.

Poe-Llamanzares assured that MTRCB would keep the public posted through its official website.

“Maglalabas kami ng bulletin palagi, maglalabas tayo ng kung anuman ang nangyayari sa proceedings,” she said.

Host Willie Revillame and his show on TV5 have drawn heavy criticisms after they showed 6-year-old Jan-Jan gyrating and impersonating the body movements of a macho dancer in exchange for P10,000.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development and several other organizations, including the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and UNICEF Philippines, have said it was child abuse and exploitation.

Amid the criticisms, Revillame’s camp and TV5 issued a public apology but they denied the allegations of child abuse and exploitation.

A party-list representative has already called for a congressional inquiry into the incident.

‘Imortal’ finale to air this month, says John Lloyd Cruz

Hunk actor John Lloyd Cruz shared that his hit television series, “Imortal,” with Angel Locsin will come to an end this month.

In an interview with “The Buzz,” Cruz said the series will end after 6 months of “hard work and love.”

“It’s been quite a journey for me kasi sabi ko nga bago kami nagsimula, ngayon lang ako papasok sa ganitong genre, ‘yong [fantaserye],” Cruz said.

When asked what made him accept the project, Cruz, who is known for being good dramatic actor, said: “Hindi naman puwedeng ganoon at ganoon na lang ang ginagawa natin. Gusto ko ding [maiba] kasi it’s a way of giving back to my audience.”

When asked if he would consider his character in “Imortal” as his best role yet, Cruz replied: “I’d say this one is very memorable. Ngayon lang ako nag-leather jacket sa Maynila para sa show na ito. Imagine mo mag-leather jacket sa Quiapo.”

“Imortal”, which started airing on Oct. 4, 2010, tells the story of how great love can stop the centuries-old war between werewolves and vampires.

Lia (Locsin), a half human, half werewolf who is out to redeem the honor of her parents, will find herself falling in love with Mateo (Cruz), the next most powerful vampire.

As faith dictates, the two were born with special birth marks symbolizing their power. Lia and Mateo are destined to become mortal enemies, but love will change everything.

“Imortal” also stars Maricar Reyes, Rico Blanco, Jomari Yllana, Jake Roxas, Vivian Velez, Johnny Revilla, and Jaime Fabregas.

Mommy Dionesia loses expensive ring

Dionesia Pacquiao, mother of Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, said she lost a ring worth P180,000 in her hometown of General Santos City in Sarangani province.

The ring, which she has been keeping for 11 years, was given to her by Jinkee, the Filipino boxing icon’s wife.

She said it was likely that the ring slipped from her finger while walking along J. Catolico Street at Barangay Lagao in General Santos City last Friday.

She wore the ring on her left ring finger after it got too tight on her right finger.

The Filipino boxing icon’s mom tried searching for the ring again on Saturday morning, but failed to find it.

Mommy Dionesia hopes that she can get her ring back, saying that she is willing to give a reward to anyone who can return it.

Despite her loss, she said she won’t ask her son for a replacement.

Shut up, Senate President Enrile tells Merci

SENATE President Juan Ponce Enrile yesterday advised Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez to stop contesting the dismissal of her deputy for sitting on a case.

“Kung ako siya (Gutierrez), let the processes of the law take its course. Si Deputy Ombudsman (Emilio) Gonzalez abogado ‘yun eh. He knows how to protect himself. Kung ako kay Merceditas, huwag na siyang makihalo diyan dahil meron siyang kaso eh,” he said referring to the impeachment complaint against the Ombudsman pending before the Senate.

Enrile said unless Gonzalez can obtain a temporary restraining order from the court, he can no longer defy Malacanang’s order dismissing him from service for alleged inaction on the case of a former Manila policeman who stage the infamous Luneta hostage drama last August.

Gonzalez was sacked for not acting on the appeal of Rolando Mendoza for nine months.

“Masyadong matagal ‘yun. Ano ang ginawa niya ng nine months para pag-aralan every word nung kaso ni Mendoza? Medyo kaduda-duda ‘yun. Ako mismo kung ako ang nasa lugar ng Presidente magdududa rin ako.”

“Two months would be a reasonable time (to dispose the case of Mendoza). Lahat ng kaso must be disposed with dispatch. Iyun ang sabi ng Constitution. It has to be decided immediately. My God! Nine months.”

Enrile said it is within the authority of the President to dismiss Gonzalez because the latter is a presidential appointee.

Gutierrez defended Gonzalez and refused to recognize the President’s directive.

Enrile said the Ombudsman should stop meddling the case.

“The President has the power, control and supervision over all employees of the executive department of government. The President has the power to hire and fire, the power to appoint and remove (employes and officials in government).”

“Kung merong right to appeal, totoo they can appeal whether they have to go to the higher court and get an injunctive relief to stop the order of the President. But unless there is a TRO, executory ‘yung decision ng President,” Enrile told a radio interview.

“Hindi naman impeachable officer ‘yung deputy ombudsman. Ang impeacheable ang Ombudsman. All other officials of the government ay removable by the Office of the President based on the causes provided by law except those subject by impeachment such as the justices, constitutional commissions and the Ombudsman,” he said.

Angelica Panganiban wins major prize at Golden Screen AWARDS

Actress Angelica Panganiban bagged the best actress trophy at the 8th Golden Screen Awards held on Saturday.

Panganiban was named best actress in a comedy for her performance in “Here Comes the Bride.”

She said she is very thankful with how her showbiz career and relationship with actor Derek Ramsay are going.

“Siyempre mas gumaganda ‘yong relationship, mas na-i-inlove ka. Bakit ganoon ang tagal-tagal na namin, hindi siya ‘yong parang nananawa, hindi pumapangit ang relationship namin. Patagal ng patagal gumaganda. Sabi ko nga feeling ko kami ‘yong magkakatuluyan talaga,” she said of her relationship with Ramsay.

Aside from Panganiban, 2 other Kapamilyas also won major awards.

Zsa Zsa Padilla won best supporting actress in a drama for “Sigwa,” while newcomer Martin del Rosario was named the winner under the breakthrough performance by an actor category.

Ping Lacson’s travel papers not from DFA

THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said that the travel document allegedly issued to Senator Panfilo Lacson which he used when he returned to the country on March 26 was never released by the department.

Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Administration Rafael Seguis said the authentic document is still with the department.

In his letter to Justice Secretary Leila De Lima dated March 31, 2011, Seguis said the Philippine Consulates General in Hong Kong, Macau, Xiamen and Guangzhou have denied issuing a travel document to Lacson.

Meanwhile, MalacaƱang tossed to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to decision on what to do on the issue regarding Lacson’s fake travel documents.

“Let the DFA decide what the appropriate action in this case is . Hayaan na natin sa DFA iyan, kung ano iyong dapat gawin,” said presidential communications development and strategic planning office Secretary Ricky Carandang.

P-Noy dared to certify P125 wage hike bill

WHERE is your yes vote?

President Benigno Aquino III has been challenged to prove that he is really sincere in the P125 across-the-board salary increase of the daily paid workers.

Based on the records of the House of Representatives during the 13th Congress, Aquino, then representing 2nd District of Tarlac, voted in favor of the House Bill 374 or the P125 wage increase for private workers.

Anakpawis Rep. Rafael Mariano said President Aquino should be consistent on his stand and therefore should certify as urgent the bill which was re-filed by militant lawmakers in this Congress.

“Certifying House Bill 375 as urgent coupled with a decisive party whip on his allies in Congress is all the Filipino working class wanted to hear and see from Aquino on or before Labor Day,” Mariano said.

“Failure to do so will further reveal Aquino’s pro-capitalist character that was clearly demonstrated by the recent MalacaƱang order on the Philippine Airlines (PAL) labor dispute,” he added.

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano claimed that COMELEC Chairman Brillantes tried to blackmail him

SENATE Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano yesterday claimed that Commission on Elections Chairman Sixto Brillantes tried to blackmail him in his desire to be confirmed by the Commission on Appointments.

Cayetano, an ex-officio member of the CA, said Brillantes promised to resolve the election protest in Taguig in favor of his wife, Mayor Lani Cayetano, whose victory is being contested by retired Supreme Court Justice Dante Tinga. Tinga’s son, Rep. Fredie Tinga, was a former client of Brillantes.

“Nung narinig ni Chairman o napanood ni Chairman Brillantes ang mga comment ko quoting media groups and quoting election watchdogs na siya’y isang election operator, nagpadala siya sa akin ng mga kakausap sa akin. High ranking officials both from the executive and legislative branches from both Houses (of Congress) at mga lawyers, election lawyers at ang unang inaalok sa akin, siya na raw bahala sa kaso ng aking asawa,” the senator said.

Cayetano said Brillantes tapped several congressmen and lawyers in his attempt to get an audience with him. He said he will name these emissaries “in the proper forum.”

“Hindi ako puwedeng makipag-usap at hindi puwedeng makipag-meet dahil sinabi ko na sa Senate media na mako-compromise ako at ang matter na pag-uusapan ay pang public so hindi dapat private ang meeting,” he added.

“So it’s very obvious that he is trying to blackmail a member of the Commission on Appointments who is critical of his appointment.

Cayetano is set to submit to the CA a letter-complaint to the CA.

“No member of the CA should be subject to intimidation, harassment, blackmail. So, I think mas malaking issue ito. At I think the Palace should look into it,” he added.

“Nuong unang offer bahala na daw siya sa kaso ng wife ko. H’wag mag-alala, ma-confirm lang (siya). That’s not the issue here. Hindi ako makakatulog sa gabi kung i-aapprove kita yun ang pinalit dahil ilang beses ako naging biktima nun,” Cayetano said.

“All this time, ‘yung naramdaman ko na bina-blackmail ako siguro itong last two weeks. Hindi na nga issue ang pagkuha ng ballot box dahil ang haba ng pila. So, nagulat ako nung lumapit ‘yung isang lawyer para sabihin na eto suggestion ni chairman (Brillantes) para hindi makuha ang ballot boxes,” he said.

“So hindi sila tumigil. The next time may lumapit sa akin ang sinabi na gusto niya linisin ang Comelec. Sabi ko oobserbahan kita pero hindi muna ako papayag sa confirmation.”

“May pinapuntang lawyer sa akin at sinabing meron siyang remedyo pero kailangang personal siyang magsabi at upuan daw siya. He’s blackmailing me to sit down with him and then to commit sa kanya. I don’t even want to put myself in a situation that I have to do that,” Cayetano said.

Ely Buendia

Ely BuendiaEleandre BasiƱo BuendĆa, popularly known as Ely Buendia, and also once adopting the stage name, Jesus "Dizzy" Ventura, (born November 2, 1970) is a Filipino musician, best known as guitarist and lead vocals in the popular Pinoy rock band, The Eraserheads. As one-fourth of the group, he heavily contributed when it came to songwriting, and to the development of Pinoy rock during the 1990s. He currently performs as guitarist and lead vocalist for the band, Pupil.
The Eraserheads
In December 1989, Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan, Marcus Adoro and Buddy Zabala formed the Eraserheads in their collegiate school, the University of the Philippines, Diliman. The band found that they weren't good at covering other people's hits, so they concentrated on writing their own materials instead. "After all, if we committed a mistake no one would recognize it since they don't know the song, right?," Buendia explained. Performing their original songs live soon earned them a cult following in their school which gradually spread outside the campus. One of the songs, a pop song entitled, "Pare Ko," which Buendia wrote, became very popular, partly because of its lyrics that included a few cuss words.
The Eraserheads eventually signed a three-year deal with BMG Pilipinas. Their debut album, "UltraElectroMagneticPop!" featured no less than the ecletic "Pare Ko" and a host of other novelty pieces that had people listening and discovering more about the quartet. The album also brought the underground college rock scene into public awareness. 1993 saw the emergence of "Eraserheadsmania" because of successive hit singles, sold-out concerts and thousands of fans.
Buendia continued to write songs for the band, many of which became hit singles and classics. The Eraserheads' lasted for ten years before finally breaking up with Buendia and Adoro's departure. During those 10 years, the band produced eight studio albums along with other EPs and singles. Their gigs took them out of the country, with tours in the USA and other countries. One album, "Aloha Milkyway, was released in the Asian region. The Eraserheads were also the first ever Filipino artists to receive the "Moon Man" trophy for winning the 1997 MTV Asia Viewer's Choice Award for the video of their song, "Ang Huling El Bimbo." This hit was also written by Buendia, like many others that the band produced.
The Eraserheads is now considered the most influential OPM artist of all time. Their contribution to the local music scene is so great, they are dubbed "The Beatles Of The Philippines". Because of Buendia's genius songwriting and musical creativity, he is often referred to as the John Lennon of [Original Pinoy Music|OPM].
Leaving the Eraserheads
After weeks of speculation, it was confirmed that Buendia had left the band in mid-March 2002 for "reasons unknown". However, in subsequent interviews, Buendia pointed to business matters as the cause of the band's break-up.
In an interview, Marasigan said he was eating in SM Megamall, a local shopping mall, when he heard of the news (how he heard of it, was not clear). He said he was "semi-surprised" and wondered if Zabala already knew about it.Adoro told of the story now famous among Eraserheads fans about Buendia's cryptic text message. He said Buendia stated in the text message that he had already "graduated." Adoro quipped in the same interview that Buendia being the first to graduate was natural, since he was in batch '87 in their school (UP, Diliman), while they were in Batch '88.
Zabala confesses in an interview that disbanding had not been that far away from the members' minds. He said that there were so many occasions where they could have disbanded but they did not. Adoro expressed the belief of some people that the band was getting too old and that it was "selfish" for the band to continue, likely referring to comments about how it's time for other bands besides the Eraserheads to shine. The band made it clear, though, that Buendia's departure from the band wasn't in any way violent and there was no shouting (sigawan) or any confrontation.
Without giving up, the three remaining original Eraserheads decided to continue on. Within just a few weeks, the "new" Eraserheads debuted at Hard Rock Cafe in Makati City on April 19 featuring a female lead singer, Kris Gorra-Dancel from the band, Fatal Posporos. However after a few months, Adoro finally quit the band. The remaining members of the Eraserheads added Diego Mapa and Ebe Dancel to their lineup and renamed their band, "Cambio."
Solo Album
BuendĆa had a solo project, even before leaving the Eraserheads. He recorded ten tracks in his home studio, "Suite 16 Studios." The album was called "Wanted: Bedspacer," and it comprised of the tracks "Wanted Bedspacer," "Monday Mundane," "Kakaiba," "Santo," "Over 18," "Tapos Na," "Acid Tongue," "Oras," "Shallow Breathing," and "Hotchik".
The Mongols
After leaving the Eraserheads, Buendia formed the band, The Mongols. It was composed of guitarist J. Astro (also known as Jerome Velasco) (of Teeth), bassist Yan Yuzon, drummer Bogs "Boga Man" Jugo (of the indie pop band Daydream Cycle), and Buendia on guitars and vocals, under the stage name Jesus "Dizzy" Ventura. The band was managed by Buendia's wife, Diane Ventura. After putting out an underground EP, "A Fraction of a Second," the Mongols decided to have their self-produced album distributed by the major label VIVA Records. The result is a thirteen-track album called "Buddha's Pest" (tracks are: "Keeper," "Bulakbol," "Bakit Nga Ba?," "Pony," "Teka Muna," "Candy Flip," "Heroine," "Wig Out," "It's Over," "Irish Spring," "Odd Even," "Your Bushido" plus an instrumental album filler).
Pupil
Shortly after The Mongols' guitarist, J.Astro, left the band, the remaining members renamed their group "Pupil." BuendĆa chanced upon the band name while reading a medical book. The band is enjoying more mainstream popularity, in contrast to the Mongols.
Newspaper Columnist
Ely BuendĆa had a broadsheet column, entitled "CURSOR," published weekly (every Saturday) in the Entertainment Section of the Manila Bulletin. Some entries are “Cloning Music,” “Crude Little Robots,” “Biocast Entry No. 13,” “A Dystopian Holiday,” “Event Horizon,” “The Answer,” “Misguided Tours,” “A Well-Documented Review,” “Parking and Flying,” “Soaking Up the Bar,” “Mental Floss,” and his final article, “A Cause for Elevation.” Due to Buendia's busy musical career, CURSOR had ended and was last published during the first Saturday of September 2006.
Personal Life
Ely Buendia is married to Pupil's manager, Diane Ventura. He has two children, Oona Aurea (from an early relationship), and Eon Drake (with Diane).[citation needed]
In several interviews, such as in the local music magazine, Pinoy, he has expressed a fondness for Stephen King books and history.
In addition, according to a local television show, Pipol, he wanted to be an architect in his youth.
Other Works

* Ely played a cameo role in Rufa Mae Quinto’s movie entitled, “Masikip Sa Dibdib” where he was playing and singing “Keeper” by The Mongols in a live stage set with audiences going wild and enjoying the music.

James Yap

James YapJames Yap, shooting guard for the Philippine Basketball Association team Purefoods Chunkee Giants, has enjoyed a star-studded two-year career. After becoming one of the most promising players during his high school years, he went on to play first for amateur teams, leading them to victories, then was drafted in 2004 by Purefoods. Yap married Kris Aquino in 2005 (but managed to keep the news quiet for months) and are expecting a child in 2007.
Born James Carlos Yap, February 15, 1982, he hails from Escalante City in the Negros Occidental region of the Philippines and began playing basketball in the second grade. He was a star basketball player in his high school years, and went on to University of the East, where he played for the Red Warriors.

With the help of several other team members, Yap led the Red Warriors to several wins that left them in a final four playoff series. It had been years since the Red Warriors had participated in the Final Four. Although the University of the East lost to Ateneo de Manila University, the Red Warriors went on to win the Collegiate Champions League title in 2002. The team saw Final Four action the following year as well, but again lost in the semifinals. Still, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines honored Yap with the MVP vote.

Yap was noticed in his amateur career, and was picked up by Purefoods TJ Hotdogs in the 2004 draft. However, he had a mediocre year and lost the Rookie of the Year award to Rich Alvarez of the Shell team.

The 2005 season saw the TJ Hotdogs change names to the Purefoods Chunkee Giants, and a change in James Yap as well. He and his teammates led the Giants to an appearance at the Fiesta Conference, where they earned a runner-up position; but Yap faced down the Red Bull team to help the Giants win the 2006 Philippine Cup Championship. For this, Yap won the year’s PBA Most Valuable Player Award.

Other awards include: First Five Mythical Team Member, 2003, University Athletic Association of the Philippines and First Five Mythical Team Member, 2005-2006 season, PBA.
