Designer defends Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie for their hats at the royal wedding

Designer Philip Treacy has defended Britain's Princess Beatrice after she was ridiculed for her choice of hat at the wedding of her cousin Prince William to Princess Catherine last Friday (April 29).

Both Beatrice and her sister Princess Eugenie—the daughters of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson—wore designs by renowned milliner Philip and despite widespread criticism of their outfits, he believes the pair looked "gorgeous and beautiful." Philip told HollywoodLife.com: "My inspiration was beauty and elegance; it's a 21st century royal wedding. They didn't tell me what they wanted because I've known them for a long time and I wanted them to look gorgeous and beautiful.'

"They trusted me to make them. Gorgeous and beautiful can be open to interpretation. I thought they looked gorgeous and beautiful. But no one is crying if anyone didn't."

However the sisters have come in for yet more ridicule as historian David Starkey suggested their outfits showed "bad breeding."

He told Britain's Daily Telegraph: "Beatrice and Eugenie suggest by their look bad blood and bad breeding. You looked at them and they looked like the sort of demi-monde of Paris just before the First World War.

"It was everything about them: the demeanor, the vulgarity. Their whole behavior was 'look at me.' I wonder if it's mummy's influence. By contrast, the Middleton family was so elegant, so poised."
