EVENT: HBO Boxing After Dark: Khan vs McCloskey
DATE: April 16, 2011
VENUE: M.E.N. Arena, Manchester, Lancashire, United Kingdom
FIGHT DETAILS: Amir Khan defends his WBA Light Welterweight title against Paul McCloskey.
British Khan (24 wins – 1 loss, 17 KOs) is currently the WBA World super lightweight champion. Khan won the belt at the age of 22, making him Britain’s third-youngest world champion after Naseem Hamed and Herbie Hide. He also became the youngest British Olympic boxing medallist when he won silver at the 2004 Athens Olympics at the age of 17.
Irish McCloskey (22 wins – 0 loss, 12 KOs) is the former Irish senior amateur champion, former British light-welterweight champion and current European light-welterweight champion.
FIGHT RESULT: Amir Khan retained his WBA light welterweight title on points after Paul McCloskey was stopped by the referee in the sixth round because of a nasty cut over his left eye. All three judges had Khan leading 60-54 halfway through the scheduled 12-round bout. Referee Luiz Pabon deemed the cut to have come from an accidental clash of heads, and summoned ringside doctor Phil Sahu, who believed McCloskey couldn’t continue with blood seeping into his eye and impairing his vision.
